Our Story
At Need More Outdoors, we know that nature has the power to inspire you, challenge you, and help you discover what you’re capable of. That’s why we are on a mission to get more kids outside to enjoy the beauty and wonder of Western North Carolina. We believe every young person should have the chance to experience outdoor adventures and educational opportunities regardless of their economic situation. To support this belief, we have scholarship funds available, and we’ll offer as many scholarships as our funds allow.
Our Mission.
To strengthen Western North Carolina communities by empowering youth through outdoor adventures and education.
Need More Outdoors provides opportunities for underserved youth to participate in a range of activities on and around the waterways of Western North Carolina. We introduce participants to the outdoors, build ties between youth and the local community, empower youth through outdoor recreation and education, and reduce barriers to participation in outdoor activities. Our programs aim to improve health, build confidence and life skills, and inspire a lifelong connection to nature.
Our Programs Team
The programs team is made up of community members, volunteers and the support staff of Endless River Adventures. Each team member brings their own set of skills and passion for the outdoors to the programs they help run.
Our Board of Directors
The Board of Need More Outdoors is made up of a group of individuals who are actively committed to finding ways to get young people outdoors, creating more diversity in the outdoor industry and committed to the 828 community.
Our Inspiration.
Need More Outdoors was created in the spirit of Maria Noakes, a world-class whitewater kayaker who cared deeply about outdoor experiences for youth. Her company, Need More Adventures, brought the joy and challenge of whitewater paddling to countless individuals. Most importantly, Maria was a mother and advocate of kids getting outside. She worked with Juliet and Endless River Adventures to create kids camps, and was hands on with the Nantahala Kids Club.
